Online Poker Guide - 5 Card Stud

5 Card Stud - The Original Stud Poker Game.

Like a lot of poker, this variant was a result of the American Civil War and was frequently played during and after. Though this game's popularity has widely declined since both off and online, it still has a strong following in Finland. I've played against a number of Finn's and as much as I don't like to generalise but more aggressive poker players you will not find. Their love for edgy poker led the Rough Guide to Poker team to check out 5 Card Stud for ourselves. The result was some tasty cash wins. We were, naturally, more than pleasantly surprised...

5 Card Stud - Rough Guide to Poker

5 Card Stud: Basics

5 Card Stud, like its 7 card cousin, is a hole game (a poker game that involves hidden, private cards) that is played against multiple opponents - at least two or more. A ante is placed (though this can depend on the table stakes) and two cards are dealt to each player; One facing down, the other face up. The player with the lowest up-facing card has to "bring-in" (an additional bet). If more than one player have the same lowest value card (i.e. 4d and against 4s) then they will be ranked by suit in the following order: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades (in our example the 4d would be lowest card). After that, players have the usual options to fold, check, call and raise in 3 betting rounds known as Streets. After the 3rd and final street a showdown occurs and the winning player determined by the strength of each player's poker hand.

5 Card Stud's failing popularity stems from the dramatic emergence of online poker and the broadening of poker knowledge. With its 5 cards and one hole card, the range of options is limited. An experienced player will be able to judge a player's hand fairly quickly and fold or raise appropriately. Get 3 or 4 experienced players on the same table and the game could last forever. Only the very new will be lured to the 3rd Street...
