Texas Holdem Strategies: Final Table Poker Strategy
When playing poker tournaments many of us set ourselves the goal, early on, of reaching the final table. That goal, for many, would seem a reasonable target as most final tables result in a very nice return for your investments and poker, after all, is all about profits.
While winning poker tournaments should be your ultimate aim we must accept the fact that winning will not happen very often. Reaching the final table is a little more likely than actually winning and it’s the higher end of the pay scales in tournaments that we should be interested in.
So, how do you go about reaching final tables as often as possible? The same rules apply for winning a poker tournament; Try to continually build your chip stack, avoid pressure situations with similar or bigger chip stacks for your tournament life, pressure players with chip stacks smaller than yours and, when the bubble comes around, resist the urge to coast into the final and apply aggression and pressure to your opponents. While that seems simple enough advice it can often be forgotten, especially in the “heat of the battle.”
After making a final table your next goal is to win the entire tournament. From the outset, how you play the final tournament will be determined by your chip stack. If you’re scraped your way into the final as the short stack then you can expect to be bullied around a lot. Some of your opponents will be happy to have just reached the final and will play overly aggressively or loose. So, as a short stack, tread carefully and be very selective about which hands you choose to move all-in with while you still have enough chips to play with. If you are nursing a very short stack then you cannot afford to wait around for too long. Try to double up as early as you can and get yourself back into the game.
The tricky part of a final table is deciding how to play a medium sized stack. While the short stacks and big stacks should be playing a pretty simplistic game, it’s often difficult to decide on which strategy to adopt when you’re in fifth place with ten players left. Should you move up a gear and try to win the tournament from there? Should you sit back and pick your spot? By playing more aggressively you run the risk of ruin much faster than playing passively. However, you also stand a better chance of winning the tournament if you try to pick up more chips rather than bleeding your average stack away. The answer is; “selective aggression”. Just as you picked on short stacks earlier in the tournament and avoided risking your entire chip stack against the big boys, you should try to adopt the same approach on the final table. Continue to accumulate chips, attack smaller stacks than yours and you’ll find you’re winning many of the final tables you reach.

Reaching the final table is a great acheivement, but everyone wants to go on to win and take hom the biggest slice of the prizepot. One of the most common newbie mistakes is to forget the effects of the ever incresing blinds. You can win more in one hand late in the game than in several good wins earlier on.
