Omaha Poker - Rough Guide to Poker

Omaha Poker: Basics

Omaha Poker comes in two forms:Hi/lLo and simply Hi. They're based on the same poker game mechaincs but vary in how wins are determined. Hi/Lo involves a split pot for the worst (if the worst hand fulfills the low requirements) and best hands and with Hi the entire pot goes to the strongest hand.

Like all Holdem style games, Omaha Poker is a community card game played against one or more opponents. The rules are really quite easy, especially if your familar with Texas Holdem. The betting is identical, with blinds, calls, checks and raises after the cards are dealt, after the flop and each subsequent community card (cards that are dealt onto the table and used by all players to build poker hands).

The most noticable difference is the number of pocket cards, where Omaha Poker players receives four rather than the two in Texas Holdem. This allows for more potent poker hand combinations and keeps player confidence high and, equally, the betting and pots too. However, hands must be formed using only two of the pocket cards and three of the five community cards. So, for example, a player cannot claim a flush without two pocket cards of the same suit, i.e. pocket cards: 4s, 5d, 7d, Jc with the community cards: 3d, Qs, 10s, 5s, Js means the flush with 4s, 5s, 10s, Js and Qs would be invalid.

Omaha Poker Hi/Lo Split

This is where it can get confusing, challenging even the most seasoned poker player to accurately determine hand strength (and weakness), the odds and decision making. Players must, using the pocket and community cards, make a high hand and a low hand. A low hand must qualify wiith a 8 high or lower poker hand and the pot is split between the winning low and high hands. Clear? Yeah, as mud right? As ever, these things become clearer when playing.
