Texas Holdem Poker: Basics
Texas Holdem is a community card based poker game played against one or more opponents. Players join a table with either cash or a number of chips which are used to pay for blinds, to call bets and to raise. Using two pocket cards (private cards only you can see) players must decide to stay in the game or fold.
Remaining in the game may involve "checking" and matching the big blind amount (unless you are the big blind) or raising - to match the big blind and increse the bet. Having done so, if there are any other players remaining, the dealer will deal three community cards (cards all players can see and use to build a poker hand) known as "the flop". A subsequent round of betting occurs, following by another community card (the turn card), another round of betting and the final card, "the river". If more than one player is still in the game, then at this point a "showdown" occurs, where active players show their cards and the winner of the pot (the collective amount of chips or money wagered and on the table) is determined.
