Texas Holdem Strategies: Heads Up Strategy
As poker tournaments progress to the latter stages eventually two players will be the last remaining competitors and they will then face off for the honour of winning the event. That stage in poker is known as “heads up” and is generally considered one of the more exciting stages of the game.
Players can experience the thrill of heads-up poker without progressing through a tournament, though. Many online poker rooms offer heads-up only tables, both in a tournament or cash game format, and those tables are usually very popular. Playing heads up games can offer that final table experience and also be very lucrative if you are good enough to win on a regular basis.
Approaching heads up play is very different from standard six or ten player games. You should expect the action to be frantic and, sometimes, borderline manic! You should also lower your starting hand requirements as simply holding out for the premium hands will result in your chip stack being blinded away. That doesn’t mean you should play every single hand. As in standard games where you should use aggression selectively you should pick your spots to be super aggressive in heads up poker.
It’s very rare in poker for one single hand to be a huge underdog against another hand. With that fact in mind and taking into consideration your chip stack in relation to your opponents you can call, raise or move all in more comfortably with hands that you would usually consider a drawing hand. Moving all in puts the pressure on your opponent and if you’re in a comfortable chip lead you can expect your opponent to fold for fear of being eliminated or going bust unless they hold a reasonably strong hand.
Heads-up poker offers all the intricacies of regular poker but with a much higher octane level of play. The rewards for good heads up players are clear to see. Profits can build up extremely quickly and the experience of regular heads up play can pay dividends to poker tournament players in the late stages of events.
The next time you have an urge for some fast paced poker, try a seat at a heads up table. Remember to play within your bankroll and enjoy the ride!
