Texas Holdem Strategies: Moving Up (and down) the Table Stakes
Assuming you have managed some degree of success at Texas Hold’em, a time will come when you consider moving up the stakes levels to try your hand at bigger games. Selecting a limit to play at is a critical decision if you are playing poker seriously. Your financial situation, your risk aversion and your poker ability should all be a consideration before you take a step up.
Full time players are likely to be comfortable with their playing ability and so will use a mathematical approach to moving up (and sometimes down) the limits. A bankroll of 25 – 100 times the maximum table buy in is generally considered a prudent approach to bankroll management and to gauge when you should be changing your stakes. For example; if you are playing $1/$2 No Limit Texas Hold’em then you should have a bankroll of $5,000 - $20,000. If we break that figure down it looks like this:
$1/$2 NLHE maximum buy in $200.
$200 x 25 = $5,000
$200 x 100 = $20,000
Dropping to a bankroll of $3,500 or less should provide serious consideration, to the full time poker player, to drop down the limits to 50c/$1.
By moving up and down the stakes in that way players can avoid ruin following a poor run but they can also benefit from the increased profits provided at the higher stakes.
Of course not all poker players are full time professionals. Many are leisure players with a job or other sources of income. For players in that situation the necessity to be strict about bankroll management isn’t required as they can simply top up their account with a fresh deposit if things take a turn for the worse. That doesn’t mean, if you’re an occasional player, that you should deposit the absolute maximum you can afford and take a seat in the highest stakes game that your money will allow. It’s always worth playing sensibly and buying in at a stake level that will allow you to make several re-buys before your bankroll is in danger.
With proper bankroll management and enough ability you could soon find yourself playing at some of the highest stakes in online poker.
