Texas Holdem Strategies: Poker Playing Styles
When playing Texas Hold’em you can quite quickly pick up on the poker playing styles of your opponents. There are four basic playing styles in Texas Hold’em Poker. Each style can be the result of long or short term events influencing the play of your opponents. The players who have been grinding away for years may play a more conservative game, while the player who just had his Aces cracked may well adopt a wilder approach due to tilting. Let’s take a look at each style:
Tight – Aggressive
Being tight-aggressive is generally considered the best way to play the modern live and online poker game. A tight-aggressive player will play very few hands but when he or she does they play them strongly. Tight-aggressive players don’t always bet out with premium hands only, making them hard to read and very hard to play against.
Loose-Aggressive
A loose-aggressive player may often be referred to as a “maniac”. He or she loves to bet, raise and bluff as often as possible. While taking a trapping stance against that type of player is generally considered the best way to counter-attack their game, LAGs can be infuriating if they catch a run of cards or simply outdraw you a few times. That alone can make playing “maniacs” a dangerous, but also exciting, pastime.
Tight-Passive
Tight-passive players are the “rocks” of Texas Holdem Poker. They often play so few hands that when they do get involved in a pot everybody assumes they are holding the nuts or near-nuts! Gaining the image of a tight-passive player can pay huge dividends if you are actually adopting a more aggressive approach.
Loose-Passive
Loose-passive players are often referred to as “calling stations”. Players adopting a loose-passive game may chase their drawing hands all the way no matter how unlikely hitting their card is or how much money needs to be bet. Loose-passive players should be the easiest players to play against if you can accept that on occasion those type of players will indeed catch the card or cards they need.
