Players are often introduced to Texas Holdem Poker via their television screens. Large tournament events, such as the European Poker Tour, the World Poker Tour or the World Series of Poker, make poker look like an attractive proposition for the viewing public. With millions of dollars on the line, glamorous assistants dropping “bricks” of dollars on to the final table and the possibility of global celebrity awaiting the winner, it is little wonder why poker players start out playing in tournaments.
Poker tournaments are the ideal place to learn more about poker for a set price. Unlike cash games, players know exactly how much they are paying in advance of the tournament beginning (unless it is a re-buy tournament) which makes budgeting much easier from the outset.
The rewards for playing and winning tournaments are mouth watering. Many players have won in excess of $100,000 in online poker tournaments, some do so on a regular basis. To win that much in a cash game would require the player to take part in very high stakes games, risking a similar amount of his or her own money in the process.
So we know the benefits of playing in tournaments but what is the best approach?
Firstly, you’ll need a lot of patience! You may well be able to dip in and out of cash games at your leisure but once you are in a poker tournament you could need to focus on the game for a prolonged period of time with only the occasional break. Staying patient will enable you to progress further into the tournament and, hopefully, collect more cash finishes and wins.
Next, you’ll need a strong game and mind. Variation (going on winning or losing runs) is a big part of poker and you can expect the well to run dry sometimes. Don’t let that affect your game or make you feel tilted. It’s totally natural to lose a lot of tournaments. Rest assured that the good times will come so long as you keep playing your best game each time.
Finally, play within your means. If you’re depositing $200 into 32Red Poker then it’s probably not a wise idea to put all that into play in one tournament. Start playing the $5 and $10 games and increase your buy-ins slowly as your knowledge and game improves. Some of the $10 games can still win you thousands of dollars so don’t dismiss them as “too small” unless you’re too busy polishing your Ferrari!
