Texas Holdem Strategies: Winning Poker Tournaments Strategy
Any strategy article that promises you a fool-proof way of winning an online poker tournament is probably not worth the effort of reading. Because every poker tournament is different it is impossible to offer precise advice on how to play every tournament you buy in to. There are, however, ways in which you can improve your chances of winning poker tournaments and we’ll take a look at a few of those today.
Luck plays a part in poker and it could be that, after winning a couple of tournaments, you are simply “running hot”. That is why it is important to examine your play, after a tournament, in as much detail as possible. Note the areas in which you were lucky. Could you have played any hands better? Most of us are involved in poker for the long term and if you can win tournaments using more skill than luck you’ll find more wins will occur.
Once you feel you are playing your very best game you can concentrate more on the finer details of tournament play. Consider playing a tournament in the way you might drive a manual transmission car. Many readers will have heard of professional players discussing “changing gears” during a poker tournament. Don’t engage fourth or fifth gear straight away! Start slowly, in first gear, and try not to put all your chips on the line in the early stages unless you are in a very strong position. Winning small pots, even picking up the blinds, in the early stages is a great way to start a tournament. Of course, if you can double up, then you should take advantage of that opportunity.
As the tournament progresses and some players begin to struggle you should consider “moving through the gears”. Attack the players who are struggling but not the very smallest stacks. If you attack the small stacks they may feel they have nothing to lose and will move all-in, leaving you behind in a hand and possibly red faced if you were stealing with poor cards. The players on the fringe of being a small stack are more likely to hold out for premium cards and fold their average or above average holdings to your aggression.
When the bubble is near the temptation is to sit back to “make the money”. Try to fight that urge as that is what the majority of players will be doing. Instead, go on the offensive and select a high gear. You will pick up valuable chips at this stage by being aggressive. Once again, try to avoid taking on the very smallest stacks who may think they have nothing to lose by moving all in.
Winning a poker tournament involves accumulating chips regularly throughout the event. Next time we’ll take a look at final tables and the best way of taking first place.
