"Poker a game of skill", says US Judge. Just before finding 5 guilty...
Rough Guide to Poker has been following the case of 5 poker players that were accused of running an illegal $20 poker game (you can read the earlier article, here). Mike Sexton was brought on to the case to defend the playes and to generally criticise the US law banning gambling in the USA. Amazingly, the South Carolina judge remarked that he recognised poker as a game of skill and not chance alone, which led many - including us - to see this as being the touchpaper to a relaxing of the current US law, especially in regard to poker..
However, although it raised the profile of poker in the US and made us think we could see the beginnings of the light at the end of the tunnel, the 5 accused were found guilty and fined. Justice?.. The guilty, on being setenced to pay a fine of $262 each, said that the case should be used to instigate a review and, ultimately, bring about a change in South Carolina law. Oh, and they're all appealing the decision. Hardcore poker players, they are. Good luck to them.
So, with the case set to be re-opened who knows what these 5 players can achieve for online poker in South Caroline and the wider USA. One thing for sure, we'll be keeping an eye on proceedings and will bring you the latest on events.
