Australian Poker Blacklist Leaked
A number of online poker rooms have caught the eye of the Austrlian Government who have been secretly building a list of sites which they deem so untrustworthy that they had/have plans to blacklist/block the domains from the Australian people.
The document was leaked and has brought attention to some of the less reputable poker organisations. While this action is meritable, with a multitutde of bogus sites on the Internet needing regulation and reigned in, we hope this is not another retrograde step by a state to resitrct online poker or casino games. However, Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband (lol!), Communications, Poodles, Tooth Picks, that fluffy stuff you get in pockets and Digital Communication said:
"This is not the ACMA blacklist. The published list purports to be current at 6 August 2008 and apparently contains approximately 2,400 URLs whereas the ACMA blacklist for the same date contained 1,061 URLs. The leak and publication of prohibited URLs is grossly irresponsible. It undermines efforts to improve cyber-safety and create a safe online environment for children. ACMA is investigating this matter and is considering a range of possible actions it may take including referral to the Australian Federal Police. Any Australian involved in making this content publicly available would be at serious risk of criminal prosecution.”
So, Australian poker fans can rest easy - the siutation is not as bad as it seems. Not only are the Government not considering a ban but there aren't as many dodgy poker sites out there as we first though, but, who knows, your favourite poker room may suddenly disappear from the Internet over night. The good news: it was probably a crappy poker room anyway.
As always, we recommend the UK 32Red Poker site (accessible from Australia!).
