Online poker in the spotlight as international governments move on this game of skill.
As a study of poker by Cigital Inc concluded that poker is a game of skill, a number of Governments are now considering whether to follow the US in an outright ban on the sport, whilst others are considering regulations that could make the game more accesible.
Ireland's Minister for Sports, Martin Cullen, announced that a complete ban has not been ruled out. In a country that is host to a number of large sports betting companies, all offering online poker, even the suggestion of a ban comes as quite a shock. Cullen, aware that poker is contentious at best, commented in the Sunday Independent newspaper, "there are choices to be made, and I'm making it clear to the industry that we will make those choices". He followed that with, "the ultimate choice would be to ban it. That approach has been taken in America and perhaps it will be taken in other countries as well. However, I do not want to go down that road. I believe there is a means of taking action.”
It is a clear statement that the Irish Government is not afraid to tackle online poker in any manner they see fit but may have some of the big operators and Irish players scatching their heads.
With the US increasingly becoming active in the enfocement of their ban (see how 5 were found guilty of playing poker), PartyGaming Plc have been hit with a $105 million settlement fee for the company's apparent slip ups. To be paid up over 8 years, the US Attorney's Office will welcome the cash and, who knows, may pave the way to an opening of the market.
In opposition to legal restrictions on poker games, the Danish authorities are set to regulate the sport and may well allow the game to be played outside of the state's control. This should mean move live poker tournaments and a possible relaxation on advertising. The full extent is yet to be seen, but a 14 man Danish poker committee is now set to push for further formal proposals to allow more poker in the country.
