Poker News April Roundup
The PPA (Poker Players Alliance) are back lobbying in the States again and spending a great deal of money - estimated to be around $3 million - trying to reverse the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act), which came into being towards the end of 2006. In a nutshell, the UIGEA prohibits US citizens from gambling online. In the past has it's been used to scare the life out of operators across the globe who dared acquire a US player. The PPA are enterting the fray once more in the hope of being able to turn the decision round and allow people to choose whether they want to play online poker (in the land of the free. How ironic.) Incidentally, you can join the PPA for a $20 fee - every penny helps.
It may not be the PPA that eventually convinces the US Govt to open the poker flood gates, it might be the economy. New figures coming from the Mecca of all things betting, Las Vegas and the Nevada Gaming Control Board, show a state drop of 18% in February. A sign of the time it is, and for belleagured states looking for extra income to prop up limited public spending (e.g. Dellaware), regulating gambling and enjoying some groovy, much needed tax revenue must be starting to look like a really good idea. It may also mean the casinos of "Sin City" might be looking at ways of getting players back to the tables, including cheaper accomodation, packages and well...everything. So if you're a Vegas kinda person then this may be your moment to enjoy a very cheap stay out in the desert. Of course, you could get the same thrill from a top online casino like 32Red from your own home.
Someone enjoying his time out in the States and Vegas is Praz Bansi. The UK poker pro is taking the town by storm with two final tables and victory in the $5k buyin event at the Five Star World Classic, bagging him a very cool $133,000 from the latter. That win puts his earnings at somewhere around the $1 million mark from his poker tournament activities. Nice one, Praz! Makes my $400 win yesterday at 32Red Poker look a bit silly, really...
