Tony Bloom Buys Brighton FC with Poker Winnings and other, more poker related news too...
Professional poker player, Tony Bloom, takes over as chairman of Brighton Football Club in what maybe the oddest use of poker winnings...ever. Nicknamed "The Lizard", though we don't know why, he is one of the UK's foremost poker players having bagged over 28 prizes in major poker tournaments throughout the world. His latest acquistion is, one can assume, a big step and one we'll be following closely, especially as he's promised to move the south coast club to a swanky new £60 million stadium. How much exactly has this man won? Or is he simply the shrewdest business man in poker and this move just one of many earlier business deals? Time will tell.
We have a winner of the first British Masters Poker Tour in Jim O'Connell. The 2 day even took place in Edinburgh in the Maybury Gala Casino last weekend. O'Connell mixed his game and powered to victory using a sublime mix of stone cold composure and aggression. Although the outright winner and receiver of £8,000 O'Connell was 2nd in prize money, with Eddie Lundon (no, that's not a spelling error) bagging £11,000 after doing a deal with 5 other players before finishing 2nd. Nice move, Eddie.
There are reports emerging today that the one licensed poker room in the UK - Dusk till Dawn - is struggling following tax changes. Fleecing the owner, Rob Young, the Government has increased gaming duty by 5%, changed business rates by £150,000 and other, admittedly, scandalous charges. I thought the Government was supposed to be helping small businesses? They certainly don't have a problem with helping out the larger ones, like our beloved banks and bankers... Anyway, you can bypass all tax and poker room closure worries by playing online poker. Problem solved.
