Is the UIGEA to be Frozen?

THE UIGEA - a bill passed in the US to prohibit online gambling in all its forms - may well be suspended in the near future following a proposal by Congressman, Barney Frank. Frankly, we think it's a great idea.

Frank highlighted that in a country that prides itself on civil liberties and democracy there shouldn't be a bill passed by Congress that prohibits something that is available to citizens offline, as poker is in certain states (think Nevada and Las Vegas for example).

"The government should not interfere with people’s liberty unless there is a good reason. This is, I believe, the single biggest example of an intrusion into the principle that people should be free to do things on the Internet. It’s clearly the case that gambling is an activity that can be done offline but not online."

Of course the Rough Guide team wanst as many people playing online poker as possible - it's the game we love, but that is not to say the game should be ungoverened and uncontrolled. After all poker has an element of chance and there are players both offline and online that have gambling problems. Currently, with the ban in place, US players resort to underhand and unregulated tactics to play illegally, which has the potential to create problems. Regulation is the only right and, lets not forget, profitable way for the US to proceed. With the latter, regulation could come with a tax on play or deposits through which a cash strapped US economy could see some extra buck enter the coffers.

The result of a suspension on the UIGEA: a win win for everyone, including players at online poker rooms, those that enjoy online casino games, bingo and other forms of online gambling. Let's hope it happens.

In other news, the much feted London Poker Circuit is suffering. Their main even was attended by just 16 players, including some former Easterenders actor. When people start lauding former soap actors you know times are tough...Maybe it was the £1000 buyin, maybe the inexplicable exclusivity of the London Poker Circuit events, either way it's not looking good. Of course it could be the aforementioned ex Eastender actor. It would certainly make me think twice about attending...
