The Main Event at the WSOP 2009 Begins...
This is it. The biggest event in poker has begun and the $8,500,000 1st place prize is just waiting to be won. It's early days but leaders are forming and some big names have dropped out. One thing we can all be sure of is: the WSOP 2009, like other years, will go right down to the nerve-wracking wire.
Some of the big guys to be dumped out of the poker tournament early include poker legend, Doyle Brunson, and Vicky Coren from the UK, paving the way for some of the smaller names to make a healthy start. The leader so far is Troy Webber who banked an amazing 353,000 chips after the Day 1D, setting him up for a length stay and possible a money finish in the WSOP this year.
Behind Webber are some familiar names in poker, like Josh Arieh, Dutch Boyd, Jon Kalmar, Betrand Grsopellier, JC Tran and David Benyamine. Day 2 can bring absolutely anything but we're confident this lot will be in the mix at the top. We'll keep you up to date the best we can.
In other WSOP 2009 news, Bach (no, not a descendant of the famous musician) has won the HORSE side event. An event that attracts few due to the challenge of playing the five main variants of poker: Holdem, Omaha Poker, Razz, 7 Card Stud and Eight or Better, this year's event say just 95 players take to the felt and pay $50k for the privilege. However, the prize money is not to be snuffed at. No, sir. Bach walked away with $1,200,000 and a WSOP 2009 bracelet. Nice. UK players featred in 16th, 13th, 9th and 5th. The latter was Huck Seed and took home a cool $276,609. Congrats to him.
In other news, two poker babes battled it out in the ring last week, boxing for 3 rounds and stopping the whole online poker world for a few minutes. Liv Boeree and Melssa Castello took up the challenge for charity and took to training hard - at least it looked that way on the promo video. Boeree proceeded to pummel Castello from a far in what was one of the best uses of the jab in boxing and one of the most one sided contests ever. All good. Boeree is a Brit. Nice one, Boeree, you've done all us proud!
Right, that's it for this week. Check back next week for more. Back to the latest poker news...
